Details
The alpine lakes and dams of the upper Formazza Valley are important excursion destinations for the Ossola and Lake Maggiore area.
It is up here that the Toce River, the main Italian tributary of Lake Maggiore, originates (its counterpart in Switzerland is the Ticino River).
Val Formazza is a beautiful valley wedged north of Piedmont between the cantons of Valais and Ticino.
Precisely because of this direct proximity to Switzerland, the Formazza valley has Walser origins, that is, of that community here from the upper Valais, particularly the Goms valley.
At the start of this tour, in Riale, signs of that ancient culture can still be seen.
Next, an excellent trail will lead us to the large Formazzino plateau dotted with marmot burrows, flowers and alpine lakes.
A wide loop to discover the springs and appreciate their best perspectives and return to the Walser village.
Also of relevant interest is the obvious study applied to the land for the production of electricity through the power of water collected in huge dams and captured in turbines installed in large and artistic hydroelectric power plants.
We will walk in open spaces along trails that have recently become famous also for being of passage of some great ultra trails.
